Miramar Digital Ventures (MDV) is a seed and early-stage fund uniquely focused on investing in the most promising founders and market disruptive ideas in the Modern Mobile sector. MDV is a new sector specific fund from the Miramar family of funds. We are located in Newport Beach, California and Park City, Utah but we invest in companies across North America as well as Hong Kong and mainland China.

We are actively investing out of MDV, raised in 2013.

Our Team

Sherman Atkinson

Investment Team | Managing Director

Prior to co-founding Miramar Digital Ventures, Sherman Atkinson was with Austin Ventures, where he was a CEO-In-Residence in their Growth Equity Practice.

Previously, Sherman spent 17 years as an operator and an entrepreneur in the new media and e-commerce sectors. He served as the Chief Operating Officer of Intermix Media, Inc. (AMEX: MIX), – incubator of MySpace.com. As part of the turn-around team, Sherman helped develop a number of new Internet media properties and also served as the President of Intermix Network, one of the largest Advertising Networks in 2005. During his tenure as COO, Intermix was acquired by News Corporation (NYSE: NWS) for $673 million. Prior to joining Intermix, Sherman served as the Chief Operating Officer of Buy.com and President of BuyServices, Inc.

Sherman received his BA in Russian from Purdue University. He also served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps and spent five years as a consultant with Booz Allen & Hamilton. Sherman currently serves on the board of directors of Pointstreak Sports Technologies, Inc., a Canadian-based, venture-backed company focused on the Online Sports Registration and Statistics space.

Bruce Hallett

Investment Team | Managing Director

Bruce Hallett is a co-founder of Miramar Digital Ventures and Miramar Venture Partners and brings his enthusiasm for innovation, product strategy and team building to Miramar’s portfolio of tech start-up companies. With over two decades of collaborations with technology entrepreneurs, Bruce leads Miramar investments in mobile Internet solutions and software. Currently, he serves on the board of directors of Brand Affinity Technologies and WellTok. He also served on the boards of Aktino (acquired by Positron), Berkana Wireless (acquired by Qualcomm), OptionEase (acquired by Solium) and RealPractice (acquired by ReachLocal).

Prior to founding Miramar, Bruce was Managing Partner of the Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison Orange County office, where he orchestrated initial public offerings, venture financings and liquidity events for many high profile technology companies in Southern California, including Broadcom, Buy.com, Exult and Applied Semantics (acquired by Google in 2003). Bruce was one of seven partners on Brobeck’s firm-wide executive committee until he started Miramar in 2001.

Bruce received his BA magna cum laude from UC Irvine and his JD from UCLA. From 2007-2010, he was Chair of the Chief Executive Roundtable at UC Irvine, a group of business leaders committed to building mutually beneficial, strategic partnerships between the university and the community. Bruce also serves on the Board of Directors of OCTANe and the School of Biological Sciences Dean’s Leadership Council at UCI. From 2010-2012, Bruce served as UC Alumni Regent on the Board of Regents of the University of California.

Brad Allen

Investment Team | Venture Partner

Brad is a Venture Partner with MDV and spent his career as an investor, investment banker and entrepreneur. He has invested in multiple early stage technology companies in the US, Hong Kong and China. With over 30 years as an investment banker, Brad worked for numerous tier one investment banks in New York, LA, and Hong Kong, including Drexel Burnham, Smith Barney and Bear Stearns. Brad spent 18 years working and living in Hong Kong completing over 40 institutional transactions representing over $1.5 billion in value including M&A and equity capital raises. In addition to his institutional activities, Brad created, funded and operated two technology start-ups in the e-commerce and enterprise software sectors. Brad’s current focus is on creating opportunities in Hong Kong and China for the MDV portfolio companies as well as sourcing deals from the region.

Brad graduated from Villanova University in 1978 with a B.S. in Business Administration.

Bob Holmen

Support Team | CFO

Bob serves as Miramar Digital Ventures’ CFO. Bob is also a co-founder of Miramar Venture Partners. Bob has spent his career building technology companies in diverse roles, from hardware and software engineering, to senior management, to venture investor. Bob leads Miramar investments in advanced technology projects focused on his Southern California roots. Currently, Bob serves on the Boards of the following Miramar portfolio companies: FastSoft, Matrix Sensors, Predixion and SolarFlare Communications (observer). He also served on the Board of SiliconSystems until it was acquired by Western Digital in March 2009.

Bob began his career as a hardware and software engineer at Hughes Aircraft, designing application software for defense-related projects. He moved on to serve as senior management in a series of technology companies highlighted by his roles as Vice President & General Counsel of First Consulting Group (acquired by CSC) and Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel of CoCensys (acquired by Purdue Pharmaceuticals).

Bob received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1985, serving as an officer of the national engineering honor society at Stanford. He received his J.D. from UC Berkeley in 1989. Bob serves on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Venture Group, and is an Adjunct Professor at USC’s Marshall School of Business, teaching Investing in New Ventures.

Edward Milstein

EIR / Founder / Advisor

As an EIR for Miramar Digital Ventures, Ed focuses on deal sourcing early-stage tech companies in the Rocky Mountain region.  Ed has experienced all sides of the entrepreneurial eco-system as a successful founder/CEO and angel investor.  Ed is an energized and engaged advisor and mentor sharing his wealth of operational experience and enthusiasm for building great teams.

Ed is an active advisor for many startups and serves as a Director for Field Squared, Inc., a Miramar Digital Ventures portfolio company.  Ed is also an Advisor for the Boulder-based TechStars program.

As the founder and CEO for Compute and Network Intensive, Inc., an internet startup in Southern California, Ed achieved stellar growth.  The company grew 5400% over 5 years before selling to Verio in 1998.  While at Verio, Ed held positions as Regional VP and CIO.  In 2000, Ed took the helm of a Denver-based, VC-backed startup in the online job space.

Ed received a BS in Chemical Engineering from NJIT.

Henry Samueli

Advisory Board | Co-Founder and CTO, Broadcom Corp.

Dr. Henry Samueli co-founded Broadcom Corporation in 1991 and currently serves as Chief Technical Officer of the company. Broadcom is a global leader in providing semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications. Dr. Samueli helps drive the vision of Broadcom’s research and development activities and he also helps coordinate corporate-wide engineering development initiatives.

Since 1985 Dr. Samueli has also been a professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he has supervised research programs in broadband communications circuits and digital signal processing. He has published over 100 technical papers in these areas and he is a named inventor in 60 U.S. patents. He has been on a leave of absence from UCLA since 1995. Dr. Samueli has also been a Distinguished Adjunct Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at UC Irvine since 2003. He was the Chief Scientist and one of the founders of PairGain Technologies, Inc., a telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the digital subscriber line (DSL) industry, and he consulted for PairGain from 1988 to 1994. From 1980 until 1985 he was employed in various engineering and management positions in the Electronics and Technology Division of TRW, Inc., where he worked on the hardware development of various military broadband communications systems.

Dr. Samueli received a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA in 1975, 1976, and 1980, respectively. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2000, a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2003, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004. Dr. Samueli serves on the UC President’s Board on Science and Innovation, and the Chancellor’s Advisory Council at both UCLA and UC Irvine. He is also on the Dean’s Advisory Council of both the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine. In 2000 he was awarded the University of California Presidential Medal, the UC Irvine Medal, the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Industrial Pioneer Award, and the UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Science Alumnus of the Year. In 2005 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, and the Edward A. Dickson Alumnus of the Year from UCLA. In 2006 he received the IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Industry Leaders Award, and in 2010 he received the UCLA Medal.

Brian Jones

Advisory Board | President, AirTouch Cellular

Brian is an investor, board member and consultant with a focus on early stage companies in the technology sector. He is currently working with companies and clients in the smartphone app , medical informatics and client acquisition / management fields. He is a Board Leadership Fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors.

Formerly Brian was a senior communications industry executive ( Bell Canada,Saudi Telecom, AT&T, Pacific Telesis and AirTouch Cellular ) with a consistent track record of leadership and achievement in challenging assignments. He’s adept at driving and managing change—technological, organizational and cultural—in highly dynamic business environments. Additionally, he has broad experience in start-ups/divestitures, M&A, and domestic and international operations.

Brian currently serves on the following advisory boards: Miramar Digital Ventures; B3 Connect LLC; CDM Company; MEDL Mobile,Inc. and Coastal Communications Inc.

Bob Hawk

Advisory Board | CEO U.S. West; Venture Partner DCM

Bob Hawk brings a wealth of expertise and contacts to his role as Venture Partner at DCM, and provides guidance and support for many of the firm’s portfolio companies. He has had various CEO-level leadership positions at major telecommunications companies and has guided numerous private companies through financings and initial public offerings.

Prior to joining DCM, Bob was President and CEO of U.S. West Multimedia Communications, Inc. where he was responsible for the MediaOne cable business and the Time Warner partnership until he retired in 1997. From 1986 until 1995, he was President of the Carrier Division of U.S. West Communications, Inc. Prior to that, he was Vice President, Marketing and Strategic Planning for CXC Corporation, a high-technology start-up and before that was Director, Advanced Systems Development for ATT/American Bell.

During 1997-2002, Bob served as a Special Limited Partner of Crosspoint Venture Partners. During that time, he served on the boards or advisory boards of twenty companies that went public. Bob currently serves as a director of Covad Communications (Nasdaq) and Centillium Communications (Nasdaq) and several private high-technology companies.

Bob (Eccles) Romney

Advisory Board | Founder, Zenographics Inc.

Bob founded and served as CEO for Zenographics, Inc., a privately-held corporation specializing in computer graphics software development. Zenographics was acquired by Marvell Semiconductor in 2006, and Bob retired from Marvell in 2009. Zenographics develops and licenses software to global imaging OEMs for deployment in low-cost yet high-performance printers and copiers. Since the year 2000, tens of millions of Hewlett-Packard LaserJets contain Zenographics software. Other important Zenographics customers include Konica-Minolta (held a minority stake in Zenographics), Kodak, Oki, Samsung, Sharp, Tally-Genicom, Agilent, and Zoran. Mr. Romney is the principal architect of the software; the latest major version is “Zx”, for which U.S. patents are pending.

Bob is Vice-Chair of the UC Irvine CEO Roundtable, Chair of the Leadership Council for the UC Irvine Bren School of ICS, and serves on the Leadership Council of the UC Irvine Henry Samueli School of Engineering. Bob is also on the Board of Directors for the Pacific Symphony, and is on the Executive Committee of the Tech Coast Angels.

Bob received a Master’s degree in Computer Science from University of California, Irvine and a B.A. degree from University of Virginia.

David Lack

Advisory Board | Managing Director, Tritium Partners

Prior to co-founding Tritium Partners, David was a Partner at Austin Ventures where he spent 11 years helping to launch and build the Growth Equity practice. Previously, David was a Manager at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he spent seven years in the Chicago Office. His primary focus was in the Retail and Consumer client practice. Prior to BCG, David was a consultant at Alliance Consulting Group in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

David has supported the Anti-Defamation League in their efforts to launch tolerance programs in the Austin business community.

David received his BA from Dartmouth College and MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Factual is a location platform that enables personalized and contextually relevant mobile experiences by enriching mobile location signals with definitive global data. Brand Affinity Technologies (BAT) provides an endorsement and celebrity marketing platform as a technology enabled service. BAT’s Endorsement Platform is used by advertisers to identify, license, and activate talent for digital and cross-media campaigns, based on brand and targeting considerations. BAT powers interactive experiences through these marketing campaigns and through netBAT, which transforms celebrity content into portals of engagement on consumer websites.
